"Preface/Prefazione" of Ugo La Pietra's book "DOMESTIC CITY / CITTA' DOMESTICA" (Plectica Editrice, 2021)
As director of the architectural book series (in Italian and English) STANZE, I have been asked by the publisher Plectica Editrice to introduce the first volume of the series, authored by renowned researcher in the visual arts Ugo La Pietra. In the preface I introduce the author and his legacy, the book and his main theoretical and artistic contributions on the topic on the room. I also insert the book into the long-term project of the STANZE series, establishing the premises of the editorial project.

Come direttrice della collana di architettura (in italiano ed inglese) STANZE, mi è stato chiesto dalla casa editrice Plectica di introdurre il primo volume della serie, scritto dal celebre ricercatore nelle arti visive Ugo La Pietra. Nella prefazione introduco l’autore, la sua eredità artistica, il contenuto del libro e le sue principali contribuzioni teoriche ed artistiche sul tema della stanza. Ho anche discusso del progetto a lungo termine della collana STANZE, stabilendo le premesse del progetto editoriale.

The first room of this series welcomes the contribution of the renowned radical architect and, above all, researcher in the visual arts, Ugo La Pietra. Engaged for over fifty years in the artistic, theoretical, and architectural exploration of the domestic qualities of urban space and viceversa, in Domestic City the author recompiles short texts, some of them never published before, raising important social, theoretical, and methodological questions regarding the theme of the room. In line with the radical spirit that animated the first decades of his activity, La Pietra observes daily life with sensitivity, analysing and critically reinterpreting – sometimes ironically – selected facets of living. In contrast to many of his Italian contemporaries, La Pietra continuously focuses on common, often banal aspects of society and material culture, hitherto discarded from the architectural debate, leading the readers’ attention to the relevance of everyday life in relation to domestic rituals, decorations, objects of common use, period furniture, street furniture, vernacular housing typologies, and new technologies. This simultaneously inquisitive and critical attitude is a common feature of the multifaceted and multidisciplinary activity of the author of this volume, who has always looked with disenchantment at the codes of contemporary society. This first contribution to Stanze is articulated, just like a building, in different rooms: twenty-one short texts or microcosms created, modified, and arranged by the author in the space of the book which convey a kaleidoscopic vision of the room from a domestic, urban, objectual, cultural, technological and, above all, communicative point of view. Indeed, the core of the texts and projects illustrated in Domestic City is the continuous search for the dichotomous relationship between exterior and interior, human and object, society and culture, memory and technology. Domestic City is ultimately an inexhaustible source of research topics and themes that start from La Pietra’s peculiar attitude. In recent decades he has been able to interpret the social context with sensitivity and acuity and although anchored to Italian reality, the value of this book transcends national borders. It opens up an international debate on radical architecture, crossovers, dwelling, technology in the home, and on the elusive threshold between inside and outside, at the intersection between architecture and other disciplines, announcing unequivocally the conceptual field within which the Stanze book series is grounded in.

La prima stanza di questa collana accoglie il contributo del rinomato architetto radicale, ma soprattutto ricercatore nelle arti visive, Ugo La Pietra. Impegnato da oltre cinquant’anni nell’esplorazione artistica, teorica, ed architettonica delle qualità domestiche dello spazio urbano e viceversa, con Città Domestica l’autore solleva importanti questioni sociali, teoriche, e metodologiche, sul tema della stanza. In linea con lo spirito radicale che ha animato i primi decenni della sua attività, La Pietra osserva con sensibilità la vita quotidiana, analizzando e reinterpretando criticamente, e talvolta ironicamente, tutte le sfaccettature dell’abitare. In controtendenza rispetto a molti suoi omologhi italiani, La Pietra si sofferma su aspetti comuni, spesso banali della società e cultura materiale fino ad allora scartati dal dibattito architettonico, portando invece all’attenzione dei lettori la rilevanza del quotidiano in relazione a rituali domestici, decorazioni, oggetti di uso comune, mobili in stile, arredi urbani, tipologie abitative vernacolari e nuove tecnologie. Questo atteggiamento contemporaneamente curioso e critico una cifra comune dell’attività poliedrica e multidisciplinare dell’autore di questo volume, che ha da sempre guardato con disincanto i codici della società a lui contemporanea. Questo primo contributo alla serie di Stanze della collana si articola essa stessa, proprio come un edificio, in diverse stanze: ventuno testi brevi o microcosmi creati, modificati, disposti dall’autore nello spazio del libro e che restituiscono una visione caleidoscopica della stanza dal punto di vista domestico, urbano, oggettuale, culturale, informatico e, soprattutto, comunicativo. Al centro dei testi e progetti illustrati in Città Domestica vi è, infatti, la continua ricerca del rapporto dicotomico fra esterno ed interno, uomo ed oggetto, società e cultura, memoria e tecnologia. Città Domestica è dunque una inesauribile fonte di temi di ricerca e dibattito che partono dal peculiare approccio di Ugo La Pietra, intellettuale che negli ultimi decenni ha saputo interpretare con sensibilità ed acutezza la società in cui si trova. Sebbene ancorato alla realtà italiana, il valore di questo libro trascende i confini nazionali e apre ad un dibattito internazionale sull’architettura radical, sugli sconfinamenti, sull’abitare e sulla tecnologia in ambito domestico, sul confine labile fra interno ed esterno e fra architettura e le altre discipline, anticipando inequivocabilmente il territorio concettuale sul quale la collana Stanze ancorata.
